Texas personality traits

I wanted to share a curious article I ran into on Internet. It talks about new research on geography of personality across all states.

The findings are based on 600,000 questionnaires, and the lead researcher Peter Jason Rentfrow, lecturer at the University of Cambridge in England, was “blown away” by the results. The researchers compare the following traits state-by-state:

  • Extroversion – concern with what is outside the self; close ties with community and family
  • Agreeableness – a temperamental disposition to be agreeable; friendliness and cooperation
  • Conscientiousness - the trait of being painstaking and careful; dutiful, self-disciplined
  • Neuroticism – the state of having traits or symptoms characteristic of neurosis; hard-charging, anxious, stressed out
  • Openness - willingness or readiness to receive new ideas

So how did Texans fare?

Texas ranked 16th for extroversion (North Dakota was 1st), 25th for agreeableness (North Dakota was 1st again), 18th for conscientiousness (with New Mexico in 1st place), 28th for neuroticism (West Virginia scored 1st on this) and 17th for openness (with Washington D.C. ranking 1st). Conclusion – Texas is not too far from the median on all traits.  It looks like a pretty balanced personality to me.
